84 | How Many Shots Does It Take? Rethinking Resource Allocation on Noisy Quantum Computers

Abstract
Quantum algorithms require repeated circuit executions, or shots, to obtain reliable results — but how many shots are actually enough? In this talk, I will present our ISLPED 2026 work on noise-aware quantum resource allocation. We develop an analytical framework for estimating the shots required for reliable execution based on circuit and hardware characteristics, and extend it to optimally allocate a fixed shot budget across circuit partitions.
On real quantum hardware, our approach reduces required shots by about 58%, energy consumption by up to 62%, and estimation error by up to 73%. More broadly, I will discuss why treating shots as a hardware-aware resource can make near-term quantum execution substantially more efficient.

Prateek P. Kulkarni is a Predoctoral Fellow at the Department of Computer Science and Automation, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He earned his BTech in Electronics and Communication Engineering from PES University in 2026. His research interests include co-designing compilers, runtime systems, and architecture for scalable and reliable quantum computers.
